Project 01_Task 03:Path, Place, Transition, Servant

Identify and extract the typology of spaces through a series of interpretive diagrams. Programming relations should be tested.

In class, we also compare the four types of space in a building with the Kevin Lynch's "five elements" of urban space in the Image of the City. That is,

Four types of space: PLACE, PATH, TRANSITION and SERVANT
VS.
Five elements: PATH, EDGES, DISTRICTS, NODES and LANDMARKS.

Homework:

  • Diagram 1 (this can be multiple drawingss): Designate the places, paths, transitions and servant spaces in your building;
  • Diagram 2: Draw a bubble diagram of your building;
  • Diagram 3 (this can be multiple drawings): Use two types of definition for each of the five elements of spaces. For example, paths (in terms of a. public vs. private, b. hallways vs. non-hallways), nodes (in terms of a. the value core or b. movement joints)
Please be creative and open minded. All diagrams are on tracing papers use color pencils, markers, and pens. These are some examples of diagrams:
