Project 03_Phase 02: Site Analysis and Section Manipulation (part 1)
Homework due on Wed Oct. 30, 2013
1. Photo collage of the urban context of the site. You are required to produce 5 sets of photo collages: Elevation 1, 2, 3 & 4, as well as a panorama. Please see the instruction below. In these photo collages, you are required to show street and river view, transportation, people's activities (with human figures), etc. Our proposed building can just be a white box for now. Please use the Riverwalk in San Antonio of Texas as a reference, but it does not have to be real San Antonio Riverwalk. You get to choose your surrounding facility types.
Here are some examples of photo collage of street view elevation and panorama.
2. Print out "site section 01" at 1/16"=1'-0" scale. Use tracing paper to produce 3 versions of conceptual longitude section drawings, with one more conservative and orthogonal, one more creative and dynamic, and one in between. For each section concept, please also come up with 3 elevation design (south, west and east elevations) for the facade facing the streets. So in total, 3 sections and 9 elevation conceptual drawings at 1/16"=1'-0" scale on tracing paper (pen or marker only). Please apply the spatial concepts into the section design.
The following are some examples of conceptual models focusing on sections.

Project 03_Phase 01: Concept Assessment (part 3)
Class:
I think we had great discussions in the past week, within each groups and with the whole class. The homework that is due on Monday is one 3x3 spatial matrix model. The purpose of this model is to translate your graphic concept into spatial experience (for the users of the space). Remember, we at still at a concept development phase, please do not think too much about actual project yet. The format is the same as the previous "point/line/plane" matrix, except you make it a physical model. The requirement is in the image below.
The following are some examples that can help you understand the project, BUT they are not the same as our project. I want you to translate POINT/LINES/PLANES into spatial experience in your understanding. It is going to be interesting to see everybody's interpretation through the model on Monday's class.

It is time to simplify your point/line/plane diagram and stick to one (no more than three) basic design concepts, and translate them into architectural language, in order to intentionally create an experience in the space. Always have "scale" in your mind, i.e. how people are going to use the space based on human scale.
Please use clean, simple and professional materials. Push your handcrafting skill to as perfect as you can get! Have fun!

Project 03_Phase 01: Concept Assessment (part 2)
After a series of research and exploration, I suppose you know your instrument at a good depth. If you were going to see this instrument as a good friend of yours, then what are the
GENDER
AGE and
PERSONALITIES
of this friend?
Use points, lines and planes to make three 3x3 graphic matrix. One is composed by white field with black figures, one with black field and white figures, and the third is a mixture of both.

Project 03_Phase 01: Concept Assessment (part 1)
Homework due on Wednesday
1. The booklet for project 02. Please use the template of the cover page and dividing page that I have sent to you.
2. Find ten images relating to your instrument. The first five images should reflect obvious/straightforward information about your instrument. It could be photo, painting, graphic design poster, or some other forms. Each of these five images should cover different aspect of the information of the instrument, be it the posture that people hold it when playing, the cultural originality, historic background, shape and geometry, how a group of people react to the performance of the instrument, etc. The other five images should be five abstract paintings that, in your mind, reflect the personality of the instrument. Please focus on the color/brush strokes/mood/dynamic/energy of these paintings, and examine how they remind you of your instrument. Please make sure to use high resolution images, and note "courtesy of..." to each image.
Print out these 10 images in color on 8.5x11 paper separately (center the image and make it take up the whole page). On top of these images, I want you to overlay at least one layer of tracing paper and draw/trace/highlight the specific information that make you choose this image, or how you think it will help you with your museum design. It is important, because different people have different perception about the same thing - but to YOU, what do you see in this particular image. You can add information while you draw on the tracing paper and you can do other manipulations. The final result should be in markers or pen (NO PENCIL OR COLOR PENCIL). Multiple layers of tracing paper on each image is highly encouraged. Carefully cut the tracing paper the same size as your print outs. Pin the ten sets of images/drawing on your wall area.
3. For those to whom I gave extra graphic practice, the exercise is due on Wednesday as well. Print out on 11x17 paper in color.
