Project 03_Phase 05: Drawing, Diagramming and Modeling (part 1)

Homework due by Wednesday, Nov 20

1. For floor plans, please use theme (in quotation mark) to name each of your exhibition spaces. Then add panels in these spaces, in order to show how you want to organize the movement of the visitors in these spaces. This is how you can strongly relate back to your design concept. Joel did a very good job in fulfilling this, I encourage you all to look at his floor plans. The following are some examples. These "panels" could be angled, curved, big like a platform, or small like a point. You should still remember how we talked about "points/dots", "lines/edges" and "planes/surfaces". Once again, refer back to your model matrix and be creative ("go wild").

2. By this point, some students still have single lines for walls in the floor plans, no doors, no arrows/break line/hand-rails on the stairs, and that is just unacceptable. I will refuse to look at those drawings, if you do not take your own work seriously. I urge you to double check or ask your classmates to check for you on these mistakes (don't be afraid to ask for help), and then when you come and talk with me, we can be a lot more productive.

3. For sections, DO NOT FORGET handrails for stairs and outdoor exhibition on the upper floors. Please mark the height of each floor. See examples below.

In terms of line weight in a section drawing. There are only two parts that should be differentiate by line weight: the "cut" (thick or poche) and the "non-cut" (thin). Reason being the purpose of a section drawing is to show the configuration of the "cut" part, just like a floor plan, which floor plan is basically a section drawing, but a horizontal section (you already know this, right?). So please do not worry about the depth of the "non-cut" parts in a section drawing. Please see examples above or below.

3. Please include people/trees and hand-rails in elevation and sections.

4. Johna and Alex did good job on the see-through isometric drawings, please go and check out their drawings (although their path analysis part needs a little bit more work). Phen is creative in the path/circulation analysis, please also look at her drawing. It is very important that first of all your isometric view needs to be very clear, and then add your path analysis. Joel did a good job on path analysis, but the clarity of the iso itself needs to be improved.

5. Do not forget to divide the materials on your facade design, eg. the supporting system for your glass. Rethink the color choice for your elevation, and make sure they look harmonious together. Remember, only 4 colors in total are allowed on the entire board. Google "professional color schemes".

5. If you have talked with me today, after you make the changes according to my comments, please pin your big sheet on your wall area. That will show me that you are moving on. The rest of the students, you need to work faster, and you need to move forward after Wednesday class.

6. On Wednesday, you need to turn in perspective drawings, interior and exterior. Check the checklist about this. Rendering not required. Line drawing would be fine, or see-through perspective view at eye-level.

7. After checking your perspective drawings on Wednesday, you will be moving forward on your own pace. If you want me to give you comments or feedback on some diagrams or drawings, please just let me know. By Friday, you need to finish 50% of your final model and put a black sheet of paper on your site model for your river. On Friday, we will also have a short group discussion, and let your group members critique on your progress - show them what you have finished by that day, and see what you can improve or need to change.

Good luck!

Project 03_Phase 04: Section and Elevation (Part 3)

Please keep finalizing your floor plan, sections and elevation. Here are some things that I want to point out after I look through all your drawings.

Floor plans:
a. the section cut lines (i.e. A-A, B-B) only need to be showed on the first floor plan;
b. hand-rails on the floor plan at stairs and outdoor space in the upper floors are required;
c. arrows and break mark on the staircases (see example below) are requried;
d. name the exhibition spaces with "theme" instead of numbers.

Section drawing:
a. hand rail on the stairs and outdoor space at upper levels are required;
b. longitude section needs to cut through at least one flight of stairs;
c. please choose the elevation, NOT PERSPECTIVE, of people figures for section and elevation drawings (one way to tell the difference between elevation and perspective of people is to see if the heels of these people are on the floor after you place these figures on your drawing, otherwise they will look like walking on their toes in the museum) (see example below);
d. if you choose to poche, then you need to poche the base (foundation), cut walls, roof/floors and the cut stairs, because it needs to be consistent.

Elevation drawings:
a. Please do not apply shadow (I know that I said let's try shadows, but it did not turn out nice on your drawings);
b. if you have large area of glass on your facade, you need to divide the glass into smaller panels for support system, and this division could become part of your design (see examples below).
c. please do not use "gradient" color, unless you have obvious reason to (e.g. curved wall).

See-through isometric
a. use continuous lines for the hidden lines (interior) instead of dashed lines, but make sure to differentiate from the visible lines by line weight.

Lines
a. all lines and corners need to be flat cap / closed square corners (see instruction below).

Homework (due at the beginning of Monday class on Nov 18):
1. Please read the things above, and make changes to your floor plan, section and elevation accordingly. Print out the finalized drawings (with all the post-production done) at 1/8"=1'-0" scale on one large paper (36" in width, no limit on length, it is not the final board). After I see your drawings on Monday, I will let you know if you are ok to move forward to developing other diagrams and putting together all the drawings on the board. YOU MUST MAKE SURE WITH ME IF YOU DRAWINGS MEET THE STANDARD, and then you can move forward. You are required to get my approval to move forward no later than the end of the class on Wednesday, if not on Monday class.

2. Path analysis on see-through isometric drawing. For example please click here. You are required to have two traveling routs:

a. a path for visitors to go from the main entrance, through the lobby and get to all the exhibition areas.
b. a path for the staff to go from staff entrance (if applicable) to the offices.

You do not need to show how the visitors or staff will get to servant spaces (such as bathrooms, storages, ancillary, etc.). Please show the paths through using the main vertical circulation approach - for example, for visitors, if the main circulation approach is the main staircase, then the emergency staircase and elevator are not the main circulation approach. Main circulation approach may not be the same between visitors and staff. Please put this drawing on the same paper as other drawings in Homework 1.

Project 03_Phase 04: Section and Elevation (part 2)

Homework due on Friday, Nov 15.

1. Please start thinking about the color palette you are going to use for your final board. Remember, do not use more than 4 colors, according to the "Checklist", not including neutral colors (black, white, grey). To get more variation on the colors, you can play with opacity on the colors that you have chosen to use.

2. Finalized floor plan (each floor), sections (2) and elevations (3), all at 1/8"=1'-0" scale on 11x17 paper. Make sure to include all the details, such as the arrows on stair cases and hand-rails. For other requirements, please refer to the "Checklist". If you are going to apply color to any of these drawings, please stay within the chosen color palette.

Project 03_Phase 04: Section and Elevation (part 1)

Homework due on Wednesday, Nov 13, 2013

1. Whoever did not have the physical model finished by the class today (Nov 11) will need to finish the physical model by the beginning of the Wednesday class. Present to your group during class.

2. Please design two versions of facades for east, west and south elevations, so six elevations in total. I suggest that you also go to the library or go online to look for some good architectural examples with good facade design. ArchDaily could be a good resource. Pay attention to the sun path and decide that how you want to control how much natural light you desire for the different spaces in your building. Please print out these two sets of facade design at 1/8"=1'-0" scale on two 11x17" paper. Please also include people and cars on the streets/sidewalk by the sides of the building on these elevations. Due at the beginning of the class and we will have group discussion on this.

3. Please make a isometric view of your digital model. This version of digital model needs to be very close to your final design, for example, it needs to be down to details like hand rails. This isometric drawing needs to be "see-through-able", which means it should be transparent, but you need to distinguish between visible lines and hidden lines through line-weights during post-production. Please print this out on 11x17 paper. Due by the end of the class.

Project 03_Phase 03: Floor Plan (part 2)

Home work due on Friday:

Please refer back to the 10 sketches (tracing over the ten images) and 4 matrix (diagram and model matrix) we did a week ago. I want you to bring back those well developed concepts you had into the floor plan design, especially the ones you had for your model matrix. The point here is to incorporate and modify the fragments/episodes of spatial experiences (from the model matrix) into a building system (our current building design). Remember "points, lines and planes"? It is ok to have some angles and dynamic curves. I want to see that you are bringing the spirit of your instrument back to your building.

While you relate back to your original concepts, I want you to keep exploring your design through floor plan design and 3d model manipulation. Please do not put too much effort on the roof design, just let it happen naturally. At the same time, you need to keep refining your floor plan drawing. By the end of the Friday class, you are required to submit a modified and refined version of your floor plan. Print out at 1/8"=1-0" scale on 11x17" paper. Please label each space with name and square footage.

Project 03_Phase 03: Floor Plan (part 1)

Homework due on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013

1. For those who did not have two conceptual models and the ones that I said the crafting was unacceptable, I would like to see two conceptual models well made for Wednesday. - Due at the beginning of the class.

2. Please make two versions of (floor plan) bubble diagram of each floor. Please make a note of the height of each floor. These two sets of bubble diagram do not need to be based on your conceptual model, but should be inspired by those models. Draw on tracing paper. - Due at the beginning for the class.

3. Start working on the floor plan drawing. First draft of floor plan at 1/8"=1'-0" scale is due by the end of Wednesday class, print out on 11x17" paper.

Project 03_Phase 02: Site Analysis and Section Manipulation (part 2)

Site Model: 1/8"=1'-0".

Two conceptual models at 1/8"=1'=0" scale:
- Exhibition spaces, lobby and hallways as void - meshed or other translucent materials
- Offices, storage and ancillary, bathrooms and elevator shaft as solid - closed-up box or stacked material
- Make the actual stairs
